Air Fryer Fried Okra
All About This Air Fryer Fried Okra
If you grew up in the south, fried okra was probably a staple side dish in your family. I personally loved fried okra as a kid, and I will admit that I never realized until I began cooking for myself that it was actually a fried dish. I always assumed it had been breaded and baked in the oven! With that being said, it ended up being something that I did not make often as I tried to avoid deep fried foods whenever possible.
Fast forward to the grand invention of… the AIR FRYER! My healthier fried okra dreams were about to become a reality! Now, I will mention that testing this recipe was the first time I attempted to make okra any other way than the traditional fried southern method. While skipping the oil certainly reduces the fat and calories of the tried-and-true tradition, I am happy to report that you will not be missing out on anything by using an air fryer instead. This Air Fryer Fried Okra still comes out delightfully crispy, and I would be willing to bet that no one notices that there is a difference!
What If I Don’t Have An Air Fryer?
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can still fry the okra in oil if desired.

How To Make This Air Fryer Fried Okra
First, preheat your air fryer to 425 degrees.
While the air fryer is heating up, cut the okra into 1/2 inch slices. In a shallow dish, whisk the eggs and soak the okra pieces for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure the pieces are coated well.
In a gallon-sized ziplock bag, add the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Shake the contents of the bag until they are well mixed. Add the okra pieces to the bag and gently shake well to coat.
Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated okra pieces in the air fryer, spray with cooking spray, and cook for 4-5 minutes. Shake the air fryer basket, spray with more cooking spray, and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes or until the okra pieces are golden and crispy.
Remove the okra pieces from the air fryer and repeat in batches until all of the okra has been cooked.
Lightly season with additional salt and serve with ranch dressing for dipping if desired.

So glad I’ve found your recipe! I’m new to okra and only really cook it one way. This was delicious and everyone loved it. We don’t have an air fryer so I just fried them in a little oil. Going out today to buy an airfryer because this fried okra was so good!
Thank you so much, Marcellina! I’m happy to hear you loved this recipe using oil, and I hope you like it just as much once you try it out with your new air fryer! 🙂
Okra is one of those side dishes that I love anytime I have it at a restaurant or takeout but never make myself. I can’t wait to try this. I will fry it in oil for now as I don’t have an air fryer, but will be sure to try this in an air fryer as soon as I get one!
I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for stopping by! 🙂
I am not an okra lover, but this just might change my mind. I love using my air fryer. This sounds like a great way to enjoy this vegetable.
